Asakichi

Born in 1962 in Sakai City located in the deep south of Osaka, Japan.

M.D. & Ph.D.

Under the influence of my 7 year older brother, I started listening

to black music (blues, soul, funk, jazz, etc.) of various ages from junior high

school, and also played in blues band.

In 1985, when I was a medical university student, I participated in the amateur

band contest “LMC 8/8 Rock Fes. In Osaka” with Soul Band “Money Makers”.

Then, I sang “Snatching it back / Clarence Cater” and “Try a little tenderness /

Otis Redding” and as a result won the “Best Vocalist Award”.

After that, I felt "Black is beautiful!" and "Groove is the best!" and covered black

music such as soul and funk.

I learned that Dan Penn wrote “Dark end of the street” sung by James Carr, a

favorite singer at that time and I was interested in him. Just then I listened to

Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham's live album “Moments from this theater” (1999)

and I was completely knocked out by its warmth and laidback feeling and “the

aesthetics of subtraction".

Since then, I have been immersed in Muscle Shoals Sound and have been

devoted to various American roots music, including Swamp Rock

From around 2009, I started playing with the swamp rock band "Asakichi &

Loose Guys". We played with various musicians and I was named “Japanese

Dan Penn” by Takashi ‘Hotoke’ Nagai who is a Japanese famous blues singer.

In 2013, I released the first CD “Asakichi & Loose Guys”.

In 2014, I started the new band “NUKARUMI TENGOKU” which played Japanese

original songs and performed gigs all over Japan.

In January 2016, I released a self-produced first solo CD “NUKARUMI TENGOKU"

(Junji Ariyama also participated in one song) and toured Japan.

Since 2016, we have regularly performed a couple of times a year as opening guest

of Kaneko Mari presents 5th. Element Will’s gig that held every month at Shimokitazawa

440. At the same time we also have performed a couple of gig in Tokyo.

From January 2017, my radio program “FM OH! Asakichi's Nukarumi Hour -Take

you to the SWAMP!-” was aired for one year.

When Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham came to Japan in March 2019, I interviewed

Dan Penn in the special version of the aforementioned radio program.

In July 2019, the second solo CD "NUKARUMI TENGOKU II (second)" mastered by

Makoto Kubota was released.

In August 2019, I visited “Dandy Studio” in the basement of Dan Penn's house in

Nashville. In his studio, he listened carefully to a Japanese translation version

of “Memphis Women and Chicken” written by Dan Penn & Donnie Fritts in the

CD “NUKARUMI TENGOKU II”.

As a result, the "NUKARUMI TENGOKU II" is now lined up with other world famous

CDs and records in “Dan Penn Museum” in Alabama.

Of course, this is the first Japanese CD.

* The Japanese ”NUKARUMI TENGOKU” means “Swamp Heaven” in English.
